- An endocrine tumor, usually originating in the pancreas, which produces a vasoactive intestinal polypeptide believed to cause profound cardiovascular and electrolyte changes with vasodilatory hypotension, watery diarrhea, hypokalemia, and dehydration. n.a usually malignant tumour of islet cells of the pancreas that secrete VIP. The presence of excess amounts of this hormone causes severe diarrhoea ('pancreatic cholera' or the Verner-Morrison syndrome), with loss of potassium and bicarbonate and a low level of stomach acid. The treatment is surgical removal of the tumour.* * *
VIP·oma (vĭ-poґmə) [vasoactive intestinal polypeptide + -oma] an endocrine tumor, usually a type of islet cell tumor, that produces excessive vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, causing severe diarrhea and other symptoms of the Verner-Morrison syndrome.
