A nonapeptide hormone of the neurohypophysis of subvertebrates, with activities similar to that of vasopressin and oxytocin; chemically identical with human vasopressin except for an isoleucyl residue at position 3; thus [3-isoleucine]vasopressin or [Ile3]vasopressin. [vaso, pressin + oxytocin]

vaso·to·cin (va″zo-) (vas″o-toґsin) a nonapeptide hormone having some properties similar to those of vasopressin and oxytocin, produced in the supraoptico-neurohypophysial unit of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes. It is found in the pituitary gland and hypothalamus of the human fetus but amounts in humans after birth are minute to indetectable.
