- A structural cytoplasmic protein, of a class known as intermediate filaments, bundles of which together form a tonofibril; a t. is made up of a variable number of related proteins, keratins, and is found in all epithelial cells, but is particularly well developed in the epidermis.

tono·fil·a·ment (ton″o-filґə-mənt) an intermediate filament composed of cytokeratin and occurring in epithelial cells, particularly those of the epidermis; tonofilaments participate in the formation of desmosomes and hemidesmosomes. The term is often used synonymously with keratin filament. See also tonofibril.
