A variety of ependymal cell found principally in the walls of the third ventricle of the brain; the tanycytes may have branched or unbranched processes, some of which end on capillaries or neurons.

tan·y·cyte (tanґĭ-sīt) [Gr. tanyein to stretch + -cyte] a modified ependymal cell of the median eminence, having a body that lies near the third ventricle and sending out processes that extend to the capillary plexus of the portal circulation. Its function is unknown, but it may transport hormones from the cerebrospinal fluid into the portal circulation or from hypothalamic neurons to the cerebrospinal fluid.
