spir·a·my·cin (spir″ə-miґsin) a macrolide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces ambofaciens; effective against many gram-positive and some gram-negative organisms, as well as Toxoplasma gondii; used as an alternative agent in the treatment of toxoplasmosis during pregnancy. It is occasionally used to treat bacterial infections. Administered orally, intravenously, or rectally.
