semialdehyde

semialdehyde
The monoaldehyde of a dicarboxylic acid, so called because half the COOH groups of the original acid are reduced to the aldehyde while the other half are unchanged; e.g., glutamic acid γ-s., OHC–CH2CH2CH(NH3)+–COO. Many semialdehydes are intermediates in the biosynthesis and metabolic degradation of amino acid s ( e.g., l-proline, l-lysine, l-glutamate).

semi·al·de·hyde (sem″e-alґdə-hīd) a dicarboxylic acid derivative in which one carboxyl group has been reduced to an aldehyde group, e.g., succinate semialdehyde. Specific semialdehydes are intermediates in the metabolism of a variety of amino acids.
