- The stage in the life cycle of a blood fluke of the genus Schistosoma immediately after penetration of the skin as a cercaria; marked by loss of the tail and gaining of physiological modifications allowing it to survive in a mammalian bloodstream.

schis·to·so·mu·lum (shis″-) (skis″to-somґu-ləm) pl. schistosoґmula. A stage in the life cycle of a schistosome occurring just after it has penetrated human skin as a cercaria; it loses its tail and becomes physiologically modified in order to be capable of anaerobic metabolism in the bloodstream.
