qui·none (kwiґnōn) (kwinґōn) any of a group of highly conjugated aromatic diketones, usually in the ortho or para configuration, derived from benzene or from multiple ring hydrocarbons such as anthracene or naphthalene; they are subclassified on the basis of ring structure (e.g., anthraquinone or benzoquinone), are mild oxidizing agents, and are usually colored yellow, red, or orange. The term is often used specifically to denote benzoquinone (q.v.), particularly 1,4-benzoquinone.
