on·y·cho·ma·de·sis (on″ĭ-ko-mə-deґsis) [onycho- + Gr. madēsis loss of hair] separation of the nail plate from the nail bed and shedding distally to a groove that has formed; it may be due to a systemic condition or trauma. See also Beau line, under line. Called also defluvium unguium and onychoptosis.
