Monotremata
An order of egg-laying mammals that have a cloaca or common chamber that receives digestive, urinary, and reproductive products; only Australia has such forms, the duck-billed platypus (Ornithorhynchus) and the echidna (Tachyglossus). [mono- + G. trema, a hole]

Mono·tre·ma·ta (mon″o-treґmə-tə) the lowest order of mammals, including animals which lay eggs similar to those of reptiles, and nourish their young by a mammary gland which has no nipple, in a shallow pouch developed only during lactation. The only living representatives are the spiny anteater and duck-billed platypus. In some systems of classification, considered to be an order of subclass Prototheria, class Mammalia.
