Genus in family Enterobacteriaceae; organisms are motile, lactose fermenting, and differentiated from other genera by specific phenotypic profiles and DNA-DNA hybridization parameters; some species have been associated with human infection; the type species is K. ascorbata.

Kluy·vera (kliґvər-ə) [Albert Jan Kluyver, Dutch microbiologist, 1888–1956] a genus of gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae, occurring in human clinical specimens. It is an occasional opportunistic pathogen, causing respiratory and urinary infections. The type species is K. ascorbaґta.
