gar·lic (gahrґlik) Allium sativum, a flowering plant with a bulbous stem base. [NF] the bulbous stem base of A. sativum, containing the antibacterial sulfur ester derivative allicin; preparations of the dried or fresh bulbs are used for hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and arteriosclerosis. It is also commonly used in folk medicine as an antitussive, antiseptic, rubefacient, diaphoretic, toothache and earache remedy, vermifuge, and aid in nervous conditions.
