cy·clo·spor·ine (si″klo-sporґēn) [USP] a macrolide immunosuppressant of the calcineurin inhibitor group, produced as a metabolite by the soil fungus Tolypocladium inflatum Gams; it acts by inhibiting activation of helper T lymphocytes. Administered orally or intravenously to prevent and treat rejection in organ transplant recipients, to treat severe psoriasis, and as a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug to treat rheumatoid arthritis; also administered topically to the conjunctiva in the treatment of chronic dry eye.
