Adiponectin

Adiponectin
A hormone secreted by fat cells (adipocytes) that affects the body's response to insulin and may have other important effects. Adipocytes produce and secrete a number of proteins. An adipose tissue-specific factor was isolated that was termed APM1 (AdiPose Most abundant gene transcript 1). The protein product of APM1 turned out to be adiponectin.

ad·i·po·nec·tin (ad-ĭ-po-nekґtin) an adipocytokine important in insulin resistance and energy homeostasis. Plasma and adipose tissue levels are reduced in diabetic and obese persons; adiponectin has also been found in the synovial fluid of patients with inflammatory joint disease.
