con·gen·ic (kən-jenґik) [con- + L. genus race, kind] pertaining to two inbred strains of animals that are genetically identical except at a single locus or a small chromosomal segment. A congenic strain is produced by outbreeding an inbred strain and then eliminating the undesired background genes by many generations of backcrosses while maintaining the desired genetic differences by selection of progeny.
