- zoo·pro·phy·lax·is (zo″o-pro″fĭ-lakґsis) 1. prophylaxis applied to animals; veterinary prophylaxis. Cf. veterinary medicine. 2. the prevention or amelioration of disease (e.g., smallpox) in humans as a result of previous exposure to heterologous infection of animal origin (e.g., cowpox). 3. protection of humans from bites of mosquitoes by providing cattle or other animals for the mosquitoes to feed on.
