leucine zipper

leucine zipper
a stretch of amino acids consisting of four to seven leucine residues, each separated by six amino acids, occurring adjacent to a highly basic stretch of amino acids in some DNA-binding proteins. The configuration of the region is a helix, arranged such that leucine residues from two separate helices can interdigitate or interact to form dimers; the basic regions are arranged so as to recognize and bind specific DNA sequences.
