burst-forming unit–erythroid
- burst-forming unit–erythroid
- (BFU-E) the earliest erythrocyte precursor in the erythrocytic series, detectable mainly in vitro and having a high requirement for erythropoietin; it gets its name from the fact that its growth is composed of subcolonies resembling bursts. It is followed by the colony-forming unit–erythroid.
