antitoxic unit
a unit for expressing the strength of an antitoxin. The unit of diphtheria antitoxin is approximately the amount that will preserve the life of a guinea pig weighing 250 g for at least four days after it is injected subcutaneously with a mixture of 100 times the minimum lethal dose of diphtheria toxin. The unit of tetanus antitoxin is approximately ten times the amount that will preserve the life of a guinea pig weighing 350 g for at least 96 hours after injection of a mixture with 100 times minimum lethal dose of tetanus toxin.
