- West African trypanosomiasis
- the usually chronic and less severe form of African trypanosomiasis, occurring in Central and West Africa, caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, and transmitted by the bites of infected tsetse flies, chiefly Glossina palpalis, G. tachinoides, and G. fuscipes. This form differs from East African trypanosomiasis in that the duration of the chronic disease is several months to years and central nervous system involvement usually occurs later in its course. Called also Gambian or gambiense t.
