transcobalamin II
(TCII) the plasma glycoprotein that binds vitamin B12 absorbed into the blood from the ileum then transports it to the tissues, predominantly the liver, where the complex is absorbed by the cells via receptor-mediated endocytosis. Deficiency of TCII results in failure of immunoglobulin production, megaloblastic anemia, granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, and intestinal villous atrophy, all correctable with vitamin B12 therapy.
