suppurative thyroiditis
a rare, painful inflammation of the thyroid gland caused by an infectious process such as with Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, other bacteria, or fungi. Pathogens may invade through a puncture wound or a channel open during fetal life that has remained patent. It is characterized by suppuration and abscess formation and may progress to a subacute or acute stage. In immunocompromised patients it can be caused by opportunistic pathogens.
