transit tetany

transport tetany a condition sometimes seen in livestock shipped for long distances, especially well-fed cows and ewes in advanced pregnancy or lactating mares; it may result in paralysis, unconsciousness, and death unless treatment is begun early. The etiology is unknown, but it may be due to acute hypocalcemia associated with improper care and feeding. Called also railroad disease or sickness.
