urea breath test
(for Helicobacter pylori in the stomach) a breath test in which the patient is given an oral dose of urea labeled with carbon 13 or carbon 14 and at fixed time intervals the breath is analyzed for presence of labeled carbon dioxide. Excessive levels of carbon dioxide indicate presence of H. pylori, since it is accompanied by bacterial urease that converts the urea to ammonia and carbon dioxide.
