- a symmetric type of polyarthritis and synovitis in which patients are seronegative for rheumatoid factor; onset is typically acute, but it has a self-limited course. It usually affects the elderly, and is almost always accompanied by pitting edema; see RS3PE syndrome, under syndrome.
