- (DHS) a rare, autosomal dominant, well-compensated hemolytic anemia characterized by erythrocyte (RBC) dehydration and caused by a defect in membrane cation permeability, with excessive efflux of potassium ions relative to sodium; dehydration appears as elevated MCHC and MCV, with decreased osmotic fragility but increased sensitivity to shear stress. RBC morphology can include stomatocytes, target cells, spiculated erythrocytes, and macrocytes. Called also hereditary xerocytosis.
