preerythrocytic stage
in the life cycle of malarial parasites (protozoa of genus Plasmodium), the period after parasites are inside the mammal, bird, or reptile host but have not yet invaded the erythrocytes for the erythrocytic stage; they first swim freely in the bloodstream and then invade the liver for the intrahepatic stage. Called also exoerythrocytic s.
