dysfunction of muscles in the lower face and throat that are supplied by motor nerves coming off the brainstem, which causes difficulties in breathing, swallowing, talking, and other functions of the throat; these are seen with conditions such as spinobulbar muscular atrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
