muscarinic receptor

muscarinic receptor
a type of cholinergic receptor that is stimulated by the alkaloid muscarine and blocked by atropine; it is found on autonomic effector cells as well as central neurons in the thalamus and cerebral cortex. Three types may be distinguished on the basis of pharmacologic specificity and five types on the basis of molecular structure; a number of differing nomenclatures have been applied to these types.
