prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase
- prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase
- pros·ta·glan·din-en·do·per·ox·ide syn·thase (pros″tə-glanґdin en″do-pər-okґsīd sinґthās) [EC 1.14.99.1] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that has both cyclooxygenase and peroxidase activities, which together catalyze the first three reactions in the synthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxanes from arachidonic acid. Its cyclooxygenase activity catalyzes the first two reactions, each of which adds a molecule of oxygen to arachidonic acid, to form the intermediate PGG2; its peroxidase activity catalyzes the conversion of PGG2 to the intermediate PGH2, from which are formed the prostaglandins and thromboxanes. See illustration at prostaglandin.
