pneumococcal pneumonia

pneumococcal pneumonia
a type of acute pneumonia usually caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, with inflammation of one or more lobe(s) of the lung; characteristics include chills followed by sudden fever, dyspnea, tachypnea, pain in the side, and coughing with bloodstained sputum. It usually begins in the lower lobe, which becomes congested (stage of congestion), then red and solid (red hepatization), and later gray from degeneration of the exudates (gray hepatization). In most patients this is followed by the stage of resolution, during which the exudates degenerate and are absorbed. Called also lobar p.
