A cellulose derivative which forms a colloidal dispersion in water; indigestible and nonabsorbable systemically; absorbs water and is used as a bulk laxative. Can also be used as a suspending agent.

car·boxy·meth·yl·cel·lu·lose (kahr-bok″se-meth″əl-selґu-lōs) a semisynthetic substituted cellulose polymer of varying size, the molecular weight ranging from 21 Ч 103 to 50 Ч 104; used as a suspending agent, tablet excipient, and viscosity-increasing agent in pharmaceutical preparations. Called also carmellose.
