1. the length of time, usually the maximal incubation period of the disease, that must elapse before a person exposed to contagion is regarded as incapable of transmitting or acquiring the disease. See also quarantine. 2. a period (originally of 40 days' duration) of detention of vessels, vehicles, or travelers coming from infected or suspected ports or places.
