o'nyong-nyong

(o-nyongґnyong) [“severe joint pain” in the language of the Acholi people of East Africa] an acute, nonfatal febrile disease due to an alphavirus, transmitted by anopheline mosquitoes, occurring in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, and Senegal, and clinically resembling dengue and chikungunya; it is characterized by lymphadenitis, joint pains, and an extremely pruritic morbilliform skin rash. Called also o'nyong-nyong fever.
