Rockwell hardness number

Rockwell hardness number
a number indicative of the degree of relative hardness of materials, determined by measuring the depth of the impression made by a steel or diamond penetrator pressed into the surface of the material being tested. There are a number of Rockwell hardness tests and scales, using various combinations of loads and penetrators; the load and penetrator combination must always be specified when stating a Rockwell hardness number.
