Na+K+-ATPase

Na+K+-ATPase
Na+,K+-ATP·ase (a-te-peґās) an enzyme that spans the plasma membrane and hydrolyzes ATP to maintain the gradients of sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) across the cell membrane; for each ATP hydrolyzed, three sodium ions are extruded from the cell and two potassium ions are brought in. The gradients are necessary for protein biosynthesis, maintenance of osmotic equilibrium, propagation of nerve impulses, and secondary transport of some molecules (e.g., glucose) across cell membranes. See also adenosinetriphosphatase. Called also Na+-K+, sodium, or sodium-potassium pump. In EC nomenclature, called Na+/K+-exchanging ATPase.
