- subacute myelo-opticoneuropathy
- (SMON) a clinical syndrome reported from Japan affecting the spinal cord, optic nerve, and peripheral nerves, preceded by diarrhea. Symptoms include paresthesia in both lower limbs, gait disturbances, visual disturbances, abnormalities of deep tendon reflexes, and psychic disorders. The hydroxyquinolones (especially clioquinol), taken for gastrointestinal disorders, have been implicated as an etiologic factor.
