equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy

a disease of young horses with degeneration of axons and myelin in the spinal cord and medulla oblongata; spasticity, defective proprioception, and ataxia develop progressively, sometimes ending as paraplegia or paralysis. It may be either hereditary or due to a vitamin E deficiency.
