midgut loop

midgut loop
a U-shaped loop of intestine that temporarily forms during the period of rapid elongation and rotation of the midgut in embryonic development. It projects into the proximal part of the umbilical cord, to which it is attached via the yolk stalk; with further development, it retracts into the abdomen, rotating further.
