- io·do·vol·a·til·iza·tion (i-o″do-vol″ə-til-ĭ-zaґshən) the liberation of free iodine by living epidermal cells in the iodogenic layer of certain brown algae or kelp. It accumulates in the algae as potassium iodide and has been used as a commercial source of iodine.
