- p-hy·droxy·phen·yl·py·ru·vic ac·id (hi-drok″se-fen″əl-pi-rooґvik) the keto acid formed by transamination of tyrosine in the catabolism of tyrosine and phenylalanine; it occurs at elevated levels in the urine of patients with defects in tyrosine catabolism.
