streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin
an exotoxin that is produced by Streptococcus pyogenes and exists in several antigenically distinct types; it causes fever, the rash of scarlet fever, organ damage, increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier, and alterations in immune response, including increased susceptibility to endotoxic shock and changes in T cell function. Formerly called erythrogenic toxin.
