- gel permeation chromatography a type of chromatography in which the stationary phase consists of gel-forming hydrophilic beads containing pores of an accurately controlled size. As the sample is carried through the gel, small molecules are frequently trapped in the pores and delayed while larger molecules pass unimpeded. Sample components are thus separated on the basis of size and shape. Called also molecular exclusion c. and molecular sieve c.
