ca·tas·tro·phiz·ing (kə-tasґtrə-fi″zing) a maladaptive reaction to a negative or anxiety-producing situation, characterized by exaggeration of the negative response to the point that negative feelings far out of proportion to the situation are produced or a disastrous outcome is unreasonably expected.
