sesamoid bones
numerous ovoid nodular bones, often small, usually found embedded within a tendon or joint capsule, principally in the hands and feet (ossa sesamoidea manus and ossa sesamoidea pedis, respectively); two sesamoid bones, the fabella and patella, are associated with the knee.
