phosphoinositide phospholipase C

phosphoinositide phospholipase C
phos·pho·ino·si·tide phos·pho·lip·ase C (fos″fo-in-oґsĭ-tīd fos″fo-lipґās) [EC 3.1.4.11] an enzyme of the hydrolase class that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate to generate inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate and diacylglycerol, second messengers that initiate a cascade of intracellular responses resulting in cell growth and differentiation and gene expression. The enzyme can also act on phosphatidylinositol, carrying out the reaction formerly ascribed to the enzyme officially called 1-phosphatidylinositol phosphodiesterase (q.v.). See also phospholipase C.
