Smi·lax (smiґlaks) [L., Gr. “bindweed”] a genus of climbing plants of the family Liliaceae. Several species are called sarsaparilla and are sources of the flavoring sarsaparilla; some have a starchy root that was formerly used as food and is used medicinally.
