Tet·ra·hy·me·na (tet″rə-hiґmə-nə) [tetra- + Gr. hymēn membrane] a genus of ciliate protozoa (suborder Tetrahymenina, order Hymenostomatida) used extensively in physiologic and genetic studies; they have been shown to be capable of parasitic existence when experimentally injected into various hosts. T. limaґcis and T. pyriforґmis are representative species.
