a drug used in the treatment of breast cancer: it combines with hormone receptors in the tumour to inhibit the effect of oestrogens (see anti-oestrogen). Side-effects include nausea, vaginal bleeding, facial flushing, tumour pain, and hypercalcaemia. Tamoxifen is being investigated for its effects in preventing breast cancer in those women considered to be at risk of developing the disease. Trade name: Nolvadex.
