A methoxypsoralen derivative that increases melanin production in the skin when exposed to ultraviolet light; used orally and topically in the treatment of idiopathic vitiligo, and also as a suntan accelerator and sun protectant.

me·thox·sa·len (mə-thokґsə-lən) [USP] a psoralen occurring in Ammi majus and other plants; used orally and topically in conjunction with exposure to ultraviolet radiation to facilitate repigmentation in idiopathic vitiligo, to produce a phototoxic reaction in psoriasis, and to treat mycosis fungoides. It is also used in the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, administered as part of photopheresis.
